Austral Risk Services team and friends collected around 600 pre-loved children’s books for the children of families who live in Foundation Housing last Christmas.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response – it’s very humbling. When people are given the opportunity to give, they are very generous”, says Steve Halbert, Managing Director of Austral Risk Services.
Austral has a long-term relationship with Foundation Housing by providing them with risk management advice and insurance broking services.
“We’ve become very passionate about the work they do – it really is extraordinary. They’re giving people a new start in their life and making a real difference in our Western Australian community.”
Steve, an avid lover of books, has recently been appointed to the Board of the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
“Last Christmas we decided to combine two of our passions – Foundation Housing and books. We wanted to get into the real spirit of Christmas and give back to others in need. So we decided that this could be a small thing that our Austral team could do with our staff, friends and community,” said Steve.
“Books open windows for children. If we can encourage these families to read to their children, then maybe we can instil a love of the fun and adventure and joy in the world of books for these kids. To me, that’s a gift for life.”
North Cottesloe Primary School children and families also helped with the book drive this year. They will continue to support this initiative in the future.
Austral has even bigger plans for 2015. We’d like to get our clients involved in book giving this year. We had such a great time doing this and we really feel like it brought us back to the real spirit of Christmas – giving.
